Cuts at CBC/Radio-Canada
The decision was known this afternoon: 800 layoffs and a $171 million shortfall. It is definitely an enormous lost for French services (335 layoffs). Fortunately, none of the regional station will close, but an important $4,6 million compression will be made in regions, affecting 42 jobs.
Obviously, I will be following, with great attention, details of this announcement in the coming days concerning Ontario regions. For many communities in a minority situation in the province, Radio-Canada is often the only French media that reflects and broadcasts local French content. I will thus follow the whole with interest, even if I have the impression that my federal colleague, Graham Fraser, will probably be asked to comment during the coming days
Il me semble qu’il y a ici une excellente occasion ici de réaliser de belles économies en réintégrant Radio-Canada/CBC (-vs- le maintien des ghettos culturels/linguistiques) à partir d’un nouveau média (-vs- la TV) plus capable de refléter adéquatement la dualité linguistique canadienne!
Les employés du diffuseur public qui ne sont pas bilingues après 40 ans de langues officielles devraient se poser de grosses questions. Les dirigeants de la francophonie officielle saisiront-ils l’occasion de se montrer visible au delà des communiqués d’usage?
